Crowns and Caps

Crowns are used when the tooth is broken, decayed, or damaged. A dental crown encases the entire tooth surface and is typically made of metal—such as silver or gold—or porcelain, or a combination of the two. Crowns are designed to match the natural color, size, and appearance of your tooth. Crowns can also be used for several other restorative and aesthetic purposes, including:
  • Protecting a tooth following root canal treatment
  • Anchoring and attaching a dental bridge
  • Covering and completing a dental implant
  • Reshaping a misshapen tooth
  • Strengthening and restoring a tooth that is fractured or weakened
  • Supporting a large filling

Bridges

The teeth adjacent to the missing tooth or teeth are crowned and used as anchors to support the replaced tooth or teeth in the middle. This can be an affordable option, however, in some situations teeth that are perfectly healthy must be restored to provide the anchors.

Root Canals

When a tooth’s nerve is severely damaged by an accident or an infection, a root canal may be needed. Root canals often get a negative connotation, but they are a useful tool in dental care and restoration. The technology used in root canal procedures has made the process much less scary and much more efficient than it once was. Typically, after removing the infected or injured material, the tooth is cleaned and filled. Finally, the tooth is capped to keep your smile looking its best. Root canals usually take two visits.

Extractions

Dental extractions (pulling teeth) may be necessary if a tooth is too severely damaged from infection or trauma to be repaired. An extraction may also be necessary if the patient experiences irregular tooth development and a crowded mouth. Teeth that will be extracted may be removed whole or in pieces, depending on the situation. Dr. Agyekum will work with you to determine if a local anesthetic or general anesthesia is necessary for your procedure.

Dentures

Dentures are removable artificial teeth intended to replace missing teeth and surrounding gum tissue. Complete dentures are made to replace all of a person’s teeth and are custom designed to resemble an individual’s natural teeth as closely as possible. Complete dentures are removable and require regular cleaning and may need adjustments in order to optimize their fit.

Partials

Partial dentures are intended to replace missing teeth when some natural teeth remain. A removable partial denture is a device used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. They usually consist of replacement teeth attached go a gum-colored plastic base which is held in place in the mouth.  A fixed partial denture acts the same as a removable denture, but it is cemented into place using adjacent teeth for support.
