Gum & Periodontal Disease

Defense Against Gum Disease

As a part of your regular dental exam at Paul Dental Group & Ryan Eight Mile Family Dentistry, Dr. Paul Agyekum will check for gum and periodontal disease. The dentist will examine the gaps between the teeth and gums. The wider the gaps—also called pockets—the higher the likelihood of disease.

Symptoms and Stages

Before you are diagnosed with gum disease, you may notice certain symptoms, such as bleeding gums, receding gums, loose teeth, general tenderness or discomfort, or persistent bad breath. The dentist will use these symptoms, along with the measurements of your gum pockets, to determine what stage of periodontal disease you are in.
  • Gingivitis – Your gums are irritated and infected by plaque and related toxins, making them bleed or feel sensitive.
  • Periodontitis – The plaque in your mouth has built up into tartar, which is causing your gums to recede.
  • Advanced Periodontitis – Gum and bone tissue are being destroyed. Teeth may fall out.
